Diversity Means? Reflections, November 2011

Riley entered her creative 3D Art and Literature into this year's "Reflections," contest for 2011. In October Riley put her entries into the running, and in November we found out she had won, "Honorable Mention" in 3D Art category, and the "Award of Excellence" with her Literature entry. The Award of Excellence is the highest honor in this level, thus moving her onto the district level competition.

Chris and I are so proud of Riley, and the person she is becoming...she truly will be a leader in this world. When we told Riley to write a essay about her 3D Art entry, we had no idea that her essay would be so good that....I told her, "we are going to enter your essay into the literature category, as well." I am so glad we did!

Here she is in October with her entries: 3D Art, "Universe of Diversity." On the bottom it says: "People are like stars and planets, there are too many of us to count, and we all are colorful and beautiful."

Here she is with her entry of literature:
My Story

Diversity means being different.
One reason is my skin is brown and everyone around me has white skin.
I feel embarrassed because I am the only brown skinned girl in my class at school.
I sometimes wonder why this is, but I know it is okay to be different.
I know this because I have read about it, and my mom tells me its okay.
It makes me happy when I am with my friends because they are nice and they don't care that I am different.

Here is Riley receiving her awards from the principal at her school, during an assembly in November.

Riley with her trophy and medal (Honorable Mention), with Grandma Turner (arm). Ha.

Riley with all her awards and certificates and smile! Love her so much!

The fall birds! We were out taking pictures of Riley with her awards, and Riley runs into the garage..."I don't want the birds to poop on my trophy!" This happens with the birds every year...they land on our roof and it sounds like we live in a giant bird cage!

P.S. I have been posting a lot! Sometimes I post every day, and sometimes twice a day, so don't forget to look and see if you have missed any! I really, really, want to get caught up!

  1. Brook, I read every post, even though I rarely comment. You are such an example of the mom I hope to be some day. Riley is such a blessing in this world. You should tell her I have friends that are different too and they are some of the closest friends I have!
