Well, Riley had her first spelling test today; I am so proud of her too...she got 100%! We worked really hard all weekend, even though at times it was like pulling teeth for her to sit still and study! Kindergarten is nothing like I remember it! I remember sitting on big rugs and thinking, "I can't wait for recess," and "I am gonna kiss that boy!" I barely new my name, let alone know how to spell, write, and sign the darn thing! My mother had to check my pants just to make sure I put them on the right way! Forget reading....I ate the book.
We had Riley's first parent-teacher conference Thursday night, and Riley is above average in her reading level....she has a great memory for words, and can sound her words out pretty well.
The teacher proceeded to tell us that Riley is very kind...she is always telling the teacher how pretty she is, and how nice she is to her. Oh...my Riley, the brown-noser! However, Riley tells me, "mom, my nose is ALREADY brown!"
The teacher also proceeded to tell us that Riley is very social, and has lots of friends, which I am so grateful for because being an only child, Riley can be shy, at times. Riley loves to tease the boys, and can often be found chasing them, and yelling, "I am going to marry you!" Riley told me the other day, in fact, that she was at the drinking fountain with a boy and told him, "I am going to marry you," and the boy just fell over! She laughed and said that she did it again, and he fell down again. She is such a flirt! I am in so much trouble.
Riley's teacher did tell us that she is one child that is very focused. She said that Riley will look you in the eye when you address her, and she will follow orders very well (not at home so much), and that she is very impressed with her attention span.
Also, you know how when you were in Elementary you always had a special art project that you got to display for the parents on parent night....well, Riley is too funny. Chris and I walk down the hall looking for Riley's snowman. Well, we looked, and we looked, and we could not find it. Finally, Riley pulls us down the hall and points to a bright white piece of paper, which in itself in not unusual, but in a sea of multi-colored very bright snowmen there was Riley's very plain, very perfect little snowman. My first reply was, "why is your story written upside down?"
"Because I wanted the snowman upside down, but they put it up wrong!"
"Why is your snowman just plain, with no color?"
"Snowmen are white...snow is white."
I am so proud to say that my child had the only upside down, plain white snowman in the whole Kindergarten! Who needs to be like everyone else? I LOVE it, because for those of you who know me, know I worry so much what other people think...I am proud to say Riley is not following in my path.
I know I totally sound like one of those moms who have a bumper sticker that says "my child is on the honor roll," but I am just so proud of Riley, and I thought I would share this little milestone of hers with you. She is growing up so much, and I dread the day when I have to let those little hands slip from mine...and into the hands of this big world where I won't be there to catch her.

What a sweet and special little girl! You are so lucky to have such a bright and clever youngster! I'm so glad that we have been able to be friends so that could have the chance to get to know Riley! She is so much fun and I agree with the teacher that she is so nice! I mean she was pushing those snowmen on me and Jason like a pro!
