When did I become so lucky? This past weekend I was so fortunate...I got to spend Friday night with my Book Group pals, and Saturday I was lucky enough to spend some time with two of my sister-in-laws and mother-in-law going to lunch and seeing "Twilight," once again. I will say "Twilight" was better the second time, still not up to my expectations, but better....but laughing with Courtney and Desi was the greatest (we need to do that more often!)
For Book Group we reviewed the book, "The Devil's Arithmetic." Boy, was this book haunting, but very well written. Yes, this book is a little depressing, considering the type of book it is, but boy did it make me appreciate my life. The book is a story of a young girl who is transported back to the time of Hitler and the dreadful concentration camps. We all of course, know the outcome of this era; a gruesome outcome with the death toll totalling in the six million.
Our discussions ranged from, "why did this have to happen," to, "what would I have done if I would have been there?" What would I have done? Would I have given up and became a number among those six million? Or...would I have tried to beat the odds, and "beat" the system, if you will? In the book the young girl is tested to either "thrive," if that is possible in that situation, or "give-in" and become a "chosen one" to die. The horrors those young children went through just trying to thrive! The places they had to hide, like garbage dumps or toilets; they did what they had to, to stay alive.
One thing I do appreciate from that era in time, is their determination to live and not just throw their hands in the air and say, "whatever." Oh how we are "spoiled," in that sense....we go about our lives and we think our lives are so hard and how "deprived" we are. Yes, I am among those who are "spoiled." I guess, I will take their experiences and apply them to my life-for the better, so that their lives were not taken in vain, even though they were, in my opinion.
Thanks Chris, for watching Riley this weekend so I could soak up some "me" time. Your the best husband! I love you! Bowling night with the girls is coming up...yeah! Sorry, Chris....I will make your favorite dinner!

I still haven't seen Twilight! Am I the only one?
ReplyDeleteWell you are a little rotten but that is whole other story!! It was way fun hanging out with you and Becky at the Kangaroo Zoo, once I was able to find the blasted place! Ahh I hate driving up here in the city. I hate using addresses. Down in O-ville we just use land marks or just say "oh it's by so and so's place" and then you're there! But Camrynn and I still had fun getting out of the house-thanks for the invite!
ReplyDeleteI had so much fun this last weekend as well. We need to start doing this much more often.
